What the Palace distinction means
A state distinction, open only to five-star hotels.
Created in 2010, the Palace distinction is open only to hotels already rated five stars. It singles out those whose location, historical, aesthetic or heritage interest, service and amenities are judged exceptional.
It is valid for three years. Atout France reviews the application, then a commission of figures from hospitality and luxury, appointed by the minister in charge of tourism, visits the hotel and interviews it; the minister awards the distinction on its recommendation. A palace must therefore have it renewed.
On 2 June 2026, 33 hotels held it in France, 13 of them in Paris.

Not on the list: the Ritz Paris and the Mandarin Oriental, Paris
Two hotels from our guides, absent from the list of 2 June 2026.
The Ritz Paris, on place Vendôme, does not appear on Atout France’s list.
Nor does the Mandarin Oriental, Paris, on rue Saint-Honoré: the group’s palace in Paris is the Mandarin Oriental Lutetia on boulevard Raspail (no. 10 on the list).
